Around him was poverty and constant begging to get by. Really early on James found his love for music and arts. When he was not with his family, begging for money or food, he spent his time with the local musician "Big Picky". Big Picky was a very skilled guitar player, getting his name for his size and his amazing musical skills with the guitar. James adored Big Picky and could spend hours watching him play his guitar.

He was willing to protect the guitar with his life, and had to fight people to not steal it for firewood. He devoted his life to music and used it to earn money for food for his family.
At age 17, James tagged along with a few other boys his age, hitchhiking on a train from the Quebec area of Canada to New York City. He is still a very poor boy, but has gotten by through his passion, music.
