@Red, Garlic is an herb not a veggie. Two different things in the culinary world.
I believe that depends. If you pick up garlic straight from the plant, it's a veggie, but when you grate it into the tiny pieces, it's an herb. Oh Noes Either way, om nom noms. Om Nom

Garlic is part of the alliaceae family, it's closely related to Leek, Onion, & Chives.

That's why you see Garlic & Chives or Garlic & Onion placed together very often. They can compliment each other well. But in small amounts.

All of those (Onions, Leeks, Garlic, and Chives) are herb plants.

Herbs are not plants. And calling an onion a veggie is like calling a tomato a veggie.

I remember a time when a tomato WAS a veggie. Damn you, scientists! I'm pretty sure onions ARE veggies, just sayin. Sad I should probably split these posts and call the thread VEGGIE VERSUS HERB: THE MOST SPLENDERIFICUS MATCHUP OF THIS EPOCH!

I could roll with it, and no it's not a veggie because it's a Herbaceous Plant and in culinary terms the difference between an Herb & a Veggie is a veggie provides substance to the dish while a Herb provides flavor.

And in most cases, you'll use 1/10th of the amount of flavor ingredients as you will substance ones.

Garlic leaves are a popular vegetable in many parts of Asia.
    Sauce.

Native American Indians used wild onions in a variety of ways, eating them raw or cooked, as a seasoning or as a vegetable.

The leek, Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum (L.), also sometimes known as Allium porrum, is a vegetable which belongs, along with the onion and garlic, to the Alliaceae family.

It's okay Tot. I love you.

That's why I said in a culinary sense.

Vegetable has no scientific definition, so their is no clear meaning as to what makes something a vegetable. Though it's usually defined as something that's not a seed or fruit.

Fruit on the other hand (along with seed) have a clear scientific definition. Thus vegetable could be assumed to be the "other" category. Containing anything that's not a fruit or a vegetable.
