    New PC Components

Post by Jarkeler on Fri Jan 14, 2011 12:29 am

Well, it's getting close to tax return time of the year, and I REALLY need to upgrade my over 4 year old gaming desktop. So I'm building it from the ground up and would like some potential input.

    Processor:
    AMD Phenom II X4 945 Quad-Core CPU

    Mobo:
    Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3 -- AMD 870 w/ 2x PCI-E 2.0 x16

    Memory:
    4GB DDR3-1800 memory

    Video Card:
    ATI Radeon HD 5750 1GB

    Power Supply:
    Corsair CMPSU-650TX (650W)

    HDD:
    Western Digital 640 GB (64M Cache, 7200 RPM, 6.0Gb/s)

    Disc Drive:
    LG 10x Blu Ray

    Sound Card:
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy SE

That's pretty much it, not looking to spend more than $1000 on it. So, any suggestions or previous experiences (positive/negative) with any of the hardware I've listed, I'd appreciate it. :)

other than the it seems a solid setup in my eyes, but im not as experienced as most of the guys in here Catface

Are you re-using that sound card or buying it?

    Do you need an OS?

Without OS, I would suggest this build:
    Cooler Master Hyper212+
    Corsair Graphite Series 600T
    Antec True Power New 550w
Phenom II x6 1090T Black Edition
    Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB
    AsRock 880G Extreme 3
    GeIL 2x2GB DDR3 1600Mhz
    HIS HD6870

After you get your rebates back ($55 total) you should pick up an OCZ Onyx 32GB SSD for a complete system.

Nah, I don't need an OS. Still got my free copies of XP and Windows 7 from my university.

Then go with that build above and add on the SSD later, make sure to use Windows 7 as well so you have TRIM support.

That WD 2TB you listed has a lot of terrible reviews by the way Tot. Also, why only a 550W power source with that Radeon 6870? Surely it would require more?

The WD Drive has bad reviews because people don't know what they're doing.

Also, no you don't need more power than that; you could run a GTX 480 and a Core i7 980X on a 550w PSU.

Though if you'd feel more comfortable, Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB drives are on sale for cheap as well. And you could buy 2 for the same price more or less.
