Halp! Howling dog Empty Halp! Howling dog

Post by Rhosauce Sat Dec 04, 2010 2:04 pm

So I've finally resorted to whimpering to The Mob about my dog.

For the last couple of weeks, mainly on weekdays (though he began today as well), Buster has been howling all damn day. I know this not because a neighbour heard him and complained/expressed concern over him, oh no, it's because often I am right in the same fucking room.

We've had him since he was a pup, which was over 15 years ago. He only ever howled when he was alone and that was very, very rare.

I've tried leaving the TV on if I'm in another room, leaving the balcony door open in case he's becoming incontinent. I've walked him earlier than usual, made sure he's fed, played with him, let him sleep on my bed, everything. I've checked him to see if he's hurting anywhere (he had a tummy infection a few months ago so I checked for swelling/tenderness). Nothing, nada, zip.

He only started this once everyone save for me had to be elsewhere during the day. However, even when someone has to stay home from work, he still howls. I thought at first it was because the majority of his "pack" had left and he wanted them home but it isn't that. Saturdays are spent with everyone together at home and I honestly just don't know what it is.

I'm worried about him as well as my sanity.

    HALP. SERIOUSLY, HALP. Cry

Question, when the dog howls when you are in the same room, is he across the room? Reason I'm asking is maybe his eyesight is getting poor and doesn't see you.

Also, being a dog that old, he may be in pain, which of course I hope isn't the case.

Next time he howls and you are in the same room, bring him close to you and see if he stops.

Oh, I thought of that too. He is old and his eyesight isn't that great but he can still see me from down the hallway if he feels like it. He's got selective hearing and eyesight. But he has howled a split second after licking my hand. He knows I'm there but he won't stop.

I can't really imagine that it has anything to do with pain because he eventually stops in the evening, hours before falling asleep. I don't think he's howling at the moment.

I will see about taking him to the vet, though, if he does this again tomorrow when everyone's home.

And no, jerks, no alcohol. Grr

To be honest I'm slightly worried about my cat for the same reason. He did have a sore paw recently, but the swelling has gone and he doesn't seem to be trying not to talk on it anymore. The constant, incredibly loud meowing makes me think something might be wrong.

I'd take him to the vet just to be sure.

I've been keeping an eye on him this evening and I'm almost certain it's nothing to do with physical pain.

He wanders from room to room, looking for someone and when he's unsatisfied with the emptiness of the place, he howls.

*Slowly going mental* I'm going to try to sleep now, since he's quietened down a little.

    'Night, world!

What the bugger is that chaps name. The dog Whisperer. His books are out there in stealable format on the internets, or on amazon for fairly cheap. He knows his stuff when it comes to dogs. My own misguided guesses include : is there something you can't hear like some asshat in the area playing violin or similar down th block. is he neutred? if not might there be a female in heat in the area and the poor devil is just a bit horny. or dog senility...but i'm not sure dogs get senile. ( thats cesar milano's website http://www.cesarsway.com/ )

I hate to say it, Rho, and please don't let my opinion weigh so much because I am by no means any sort of veterinarian. BUT, it does sound like your dog maybe suffering acutely from Alzheimer's. I know that's not fun to think about but based on the description you've given us, if he is playing with you one minute, then expressing showing signs of being lonely (howling) when you think he know's you're still there the next, then it is possible that he is ACTUALLY forgetting that someone is in the house, much less in the same room. The only reason I say this is a possibility is because it is what happened to my Aunt's dog when he got a tumor. When he was lonely he would seriously wander around looking for people he knew and would be very defensive around the family that he lived with for a good 12 years.

Anyways, I hope that helps. Sorry to hear about your pup.

BP - I appreciate it, don't worry. I need any suggestions and although it didn't occur to me that that could be an option, it does make me feel that going to a vet is more important. Like I said, though, I'll keep an eye on him today/tomorrow and if he continues, I'll take him to the vet asap.

Ingo - I think his name is Cesar Milan. There aren't any asshats playing stuff, no. I figure this because like I said, my dog's hearing is going too. I could be wrong, though. Still, vet seems like the best option for now.

    I appreciate the help, guys!
