    Ola

Some of you know I have a Falcon-NW MachV that I got back in 2007.
I have done a few things; added RAM, a second HD and a second Video Card - I have (2) GTX260's.
Its running fine, but was considering a major upgrade, new Motherboard and Processor. I currently have an EVGA NForce 680I SLI and Intel Core2Duo E6600 - 2.4ghz.

In talking with the guys from Falcon and some of my own research the following two options were recomended:

    1. ASUS Rampage III Extreme
    Intel Core i7 950
    12 GB ddr3 1333mhz RAM
    Parts, labor and shipping.....$1200.

    2. ASUS P7P55D-E Pro
    Intel Core i5 760
    8 GB ddr3 1333mhz RAM
    Parts, labor and shipping.....$ 850.

I am going to have Falcon do it, I don't have the time or incling to tackle it. Plus, if I did do it myself, it would void the warranty.

    Thoughts? Comments???

Well the first one would be amazing if you're doing just about anything at once and feel like running everything in the world.
The second is the more "cost efficient" version, and will do about the same in games.

Is there a particular reason you're upgrading? Something specific you're trying to do that your current PC won't let you?

Regardless of what it is, the $1200 build will doubtless do it. I'm just wondering if the $850 build would be more sensible.

There are very few instances where you would need more than a Core i5 7xx CPU.

I also forgot; but you should ask if you can get an SSD Rally. It'd be one of the most noticeable upgrades.

I was thinking the same thing, I've got an i5 750 and it's always my hdd/ram speed holding me back when it comes to doing daily tasks.

HDD is the current bottleneck of most systems; in terms of relative performance, large scale RAID arrays (multiple HDD's linked together) or a good SSD will be more noticeable in performance as it will drastically drop your boot times and such.

I wanted ot add to this, only because I am not your average user. I have very specific likes and tastes when it comes to PC power.

First of all this IS NOT to boast but rather broaden your horizons. I run 4 monitors, and 16 gigs ram, windows7 64, with that said, I need all the cpu's I can get. Why? I run virtuals!

In a nutshell for those that are behind. I have over 60 OS's that I run for different things, like, one OS is nothing but design software, another OS is for programming languages, and a few are for testing and you get the idea. In this route I never have my main OS get infected, slowed down or anything except when it has ran for over a year, in that case I re-install fresh. All I do on the main is play games, and for that I have two PC machines that I use to play.

Anyhow, if you are going to run multiple Virtual OS's, while surfing, chatting or whatever, then by all means get the bad ass setup! Otherwise, with those two setups you will not see much difference at all except out of your pocket book!

For me I only need and want the best because I do not want to be slowed down and I always have at least 3 OS's loaded at any one time while surfing, invoicing, desiging and or whatever...

As for speed and performance, run in a raid setup, and get an SSD that will meet your needs, or even a hybrid drive that has both.

Hope that helps, if not, well, I threw my 2-cents in

    Thanks guys!

I'm not trying to do anything special. I know I am not getting what I can out of the video cards and i think its the processor and MB. I figured that if I am going to upgrade and the cost is not too menacing, go for the gusto and it will do me good for quite a while.

I have not decided whether to go ahead yet or not. I just got it in my head and figured lets look into it and price it up......
