Throwdown is a post-hardcore groove metal band out of Orange County, California, founded in 1997. Now, the stuff that got me into Throwdown isn't their early stuff. Their albums up until the previous two were labeled hardcore. But their two recent albums, Venom and Tears and Deathless, are a page out of Pantera. Their groove metal sound is just that - groovy. They have a great mix of growling and singing, chugging and harmonies, bass and drum, just an epic mix. The vocals are a mix between Pantera's Phil Anselmo and Godsmack's Sulley Erna, but with quite a bit of originality thrown in. The vocalist finds a great balance between hard line and harmony, and walks it beautifully, more noticeably in Deathless. The music is thrash and groove inspired, chugging away and making you want to beat your head up and down, and then BAM! harmony hits and you can't help but feel everything as you sing along. This is honestly the closest we are ever going to get to that beautiful Pantera chemistry we saw in the nineties before, god bless, Dime died.
Don't believe me? Just listen, in two tracks:
